Shade Best Skill Build and Guide MapleStory

Shade is a strong DPM focused class that also offers party support. It’s visually a great class and an easy one to pick up and play. Definitely a class that is appreciated in parties but also great at solo bossing.

Gauge Class?No

Shade is more of a DPM class than burst. This means you won’t be doing huge chunks of damage during your bursts but, that could be a good thing since your burst isn’t as important and doesn’t need to be executed perfectly.

You do have some burst which is mainly on a 2 min CD but Shade also has a mini burst with a 1 min CD (more info below). So you’ll be hitting hard often.

Shade has party utility with a skill called Soul Splitter. This skill lets you and your party deal extra damage to an enemy by creating a Split Soul for people to hit.

Shade Beginner Skills

Some important Shade skills in the beginner tab are, Fox Trot, Spirit Bond 1, Close Call and Hero’s Echo

Fox Trot is a great teleport skill. When used near enemies it will teleport to the farthest one. If there are no enemies nearby you will be teleported forward. Can be used in the air but only goes forward if no enemies are nearby.

Great for bossing but takes a bit of getting used to for mobbing. Also not necessary while mobbing.

Hero’s Echo is an active buff of +4% Attack and Magic Attack for 40 mins with a cooldown of 5 mins. Great skill to have up at all times for extra damage.

Spirit Bond 1 is a passive skill that gives you 100% Knockback Resistance, 30% Damage Reduction, and Life Steal (recovers 1% HP on landed hits).

Close Call is Shade’s link skill. Every time you are about to take a hit that will kill you, you have a 10%(at max level) chance to survive the hit. Really great for when you are learning a boss or when you’re getting carried and you just need to survive.

Not the best once you’re comfortable with the boss and want to clear quickly but definitely has its place defensively.

Ground Pound is your 2nd job mobbing skill. You can forget about this skill once you reach 3rd job.

Blade Imp – Direct is a skill that lets you choose which direction your Blade Imp Slash will go. What you choose doesn’t matter in bossing but in mobbing it can help you since it drags mobs towards you.

This is an important skill to use while bossing since it leaves a mark on the enemy which lets you deal extra final damage.

Back Step is a mobility skill that can be used anytime and sends you backwards. Not a teleport so you can still get hit by things you pass through. Really good for animation cancelling skills like Spirit Frenzy, and Fox God Flash.

Fox Spirits is a toggle skill that you always want to have on. Once its on it will summon orbs that help you deal damage while you use your attack skills.

Shockwave Punch is your 3rd job mobbing skill. You can forget about this skill once you reach 4th job and get your main mobbing skill Bomb Punch.

Spirit Trap is a bind skill mainly used in boss fights. It will stun the enemy for a short duration, giving you the chance to do your burst and deal lots of damage. You can also add in Erda Nova for a backup bind.

Spirit Frenzy is a summon skill that deals damage in the spot you placed it. You can have 100% uptime on it since the duration lasts longer than the cooldown. Great for mobbing but can be a little annoying when bossing since the boss can move out of the zone. You can animation cancel it with Back Step.

Summon Other Spirit is a toggle skill that gives you an extra life. Long cooldown so you should save it for harder bosses or when you think you need the extra life.

Bomb Punch is your main spammable mobbing skill. Big range and hits more enemies compared to Spirit Claw.

Spirit Claw is your main spammable bossing skill. Hits less enemies but you do hit them harder so great for bossing.

Death Mark is a debuff skill mainly used for bossing. Make sure to always keep this debuff on the boss so that you can deal more damage and recover more HP.

Soul Splitter is one of your most important skills. Useful for mobbing and bossing. For mobbing you want to use this whenever you can, especially on elite mobs, since it will give you 100% extra EXP on the debuffed enemies.

For bossing it will apply a debuff which gives you extra Final Damage if you stay inside the zone. Really important skill to use when doing your burst setups. Also, for party bossing, make sure to coordinate with your teammates so that they also can get extra Final Damage.

Spirit Ward is mainly used in bossing. It will create a barrier of guardians which can each nullify a debuff that you have.

Heroic Memories is an active buff skill that is mainly used for burst setup and bossing.

Fox Marble Fusion is one of your big burst active buff skills. Makes it so that Fox Spirit Orbs can spawn and help you deal additional damage for 30 sec. 2 min cooldown so make sure to use it with your other big burst skills.

Shade 5th Job Skills

When you reach level 200 you’ll get access to your V Matrix and new 5th job skills. The best way to level them up is through Nodestones and Experience nodes. Shade V Skills are in order of importance are Spirit Gate, True Spirit Claw, Smashing Multipunch, Fox God Flash.

Shade 5th Job Skill Explanation

Fox God Flash is a skill mainly used for bossing. Big Final Damage buff and HP recovery. One of your core buffs in your burst setup. You can animation cancel it with Back Step.

Spirit Gate is mainly used for bossing. It deals a big debuff and can be used every 1 min.

True Spirit Claw is a passive upgrade to your Spirit Claw.

Smashing Multipunch is mainly used for bossing. This is one of your big burst skills that you can use every 1 min. Make sure to hold it down the entire time for the most damage.

Shade Perfect Trio Nodes

In the V Matrix you’ll also have Boost Nodes. They are there to level up your 1st – 4th job skills past their initial cap. You’ll want to level up the most useful skills for your class and those will form your perfect trios.

For Shade these are the perfect nodes you’ll want to look for,

Primary NodeSecondary Node

Spirit Claw

Death Mark

Spirit Frenzy

Bomb Punch

Fox Spirits

Soul Splitter

If you’re making a Shade as your main, you’ll want both Primary and Secondary node pairs. If you’re making a boss mule, all you need is the Primary Node.

An explanation of perfect trios and full list of all classes and their perfect trio nodes here.

All Useful 5th Job Skills for Shade

These are all the skills you’ll need to get the most out of Shade. Any other skills are not useful and can be disassembled.

Do not level up your Decent skills past level 1 unless you’re at the end game and min/maxing to get an extra 5 stat at max level. At level 1 all your decent skills have 100% uptime since the duration will be longer than the cooldown. Holy Symbol is the only exception since you’ll get more exp and drop rate as you level it.

Decent Sharp Eyes

Decent Combat Orders

Decent Speed Infusion

Maple World Goddess’s Blessing

Loaded Dice

Overdrive

Decent Holy Symbol

Freud’s Wisdom

Blink

Decent Advanced Blessing

Will Of Erda

Erda Shower

Erda Nova

Rope Lift

Decent Holy Fountain

True Arachnid Reflection (Obtained from Will boss)

Solar Crest (Obtained from Seren boss)

The ones that are underlined and bolded are not necessary if making a boss mule.

Freud’s Wisdom is a really powerful skill but it requires a setup and you can’t die during the stacking. There are 6 stacks and buffs you can get. They are,

  • Stack 1 – Skill Cooldown: -10% (excludes skills unaffected by cooldown reduction)
  • Stack 2 – Status Resistance: +10
  • Stack 3 – All Stats: +26
  • Stack 4 – Attack Power & Magic ATT: +10
  • Stack 5 – Boss Damage: +10%
  • Stack 6: Invincible for duration of skill

Every 25 seconds you need to press the skill again to get to the next stack. If you make it to all 6 stacks you get a huge 30 second I-Frame where you can do whatever you want which is really good in boss fights.

If the buff expires or if you die during the stacking process the skill will stop stacking and immediately go on cooldown. It will take you around 2 mins and 5 seconds to get all the stacks so be careful during that time.

All Heroes have this skill (Mercedes, Shade, Aran, Phantom, Evan, Luminous) so if any of those are your main it is good to learn how to use it otherwise I wouldn’t bother on boss mules.

Shade 5th Job V Matrix Node Slot Priority

This is the order of what skills you should equip first,

  • Boost Nodes, Spiritgate, (Decent Holy Symbol + Erda Fountain for training)
  • True Spirit Claw, Overdrive, Smashing Multipunch, Fox God Flash
  • Decent Sharp Eyes, Speed Infusion, Combat Orders, Maple World Goddess’s Blessing
  • Loaded Dice, Freud’s Blessing
  • Everything else

Maxing the skills in this order (except decents) is also ideal for bossing but if you want to get better training rates I would suggest putting more focus on Boost Nodes, Decent Holy Symbol, Spiritgate, and Erda Shower.

Shade Bossing Combo

Shade is a 2 min burst class that also has a good 1 min mini burst. The beginning doesn’t include stuff that you should have up all the time, like Decent Sharp Eyes, Decent Combat Orders, Fox God’s Favor, and Toggles. Put those skills on a pet with Auto Buff so you never have to worry about them.

Also, if you’re solo bossing and you have Continuous 4 ring, that is the better option instead of swapping from Ror4 and Weapon Jump. Since you don’t need to activate Continuous, just skip the ring activation parts below.

Shade Big Burst Setup

  1. Maple World Goddess’s Blessing, (True Arachnid Reflection + Solar Crest), Heroic Memories, Spirit Frenzy, Blade Imp – Slash
  2. Overdrive, Terms and Conditions (AB Link), Spirit Trap, Soul Splitter, Fox God Flash, Fox Marble Fusion
  3. Spiritgate, Death Mark, Smashing Multipunch, Spirit Claw
  4. Terms and Conditions (AB Link), Ring of Restraint (Ror4), Advent of the Fox (Origin Skill), Spirit Claw

If you don’t have Ror4, Advent of the Fox, True Arachnid Reflection, or Solar Crest you can just skip or replace it with any ring you have.

Shade Mini Burst Setup

Shade mini burst is based around Soul Splitter and Smashing Multipunch.

  1. Spirit Frenzy, Spirit Claw, Overdrive, Death Mark
  2. Terms and Condition (AB Link), Soul Split, Spiritgate
  3. Smashing Multipunch, Spirit Claw
  1. > > >
  2. > >

A little tip for setting up your burst on any character is that you set up your buff keybinds in an easy to reach descending order. I usually go down the number line (5-1) and when I reach 1 I know I used every buff I need for bursting. For example, you put your 1st buff on 5 then 2nd buff on 4, 3rd buff on 3, etc, till you’re done.

Shade 6th Job HEXA Skills

The HEXA matrix is split up into Skill Node (6th job Origin skill), Mastery Node (enhances 4th job skills), Boost Node (5th job enhancement), and Common Node (Job specific skills)

You’ll get your 1st Origin skill for free once you finish the quest line and the rest you’ll have to unlock yourself. Link to a Guide for HEXA Matrix so that you’ll have the best start possible.

6th Job Shade HEXA Skill Priority

When starting your HEXA Matrix you’ll want to unlock everything then start putting focus on depending on if you’re a solo progression player or a party player.

If you’re a party player you’ll want to focus on your burst and getting that as high as possible. Especially important in late/end game bosses. For Shade

If you’re a solo progression player there are infographics online and in the Shade discord that you can follow.

6th Job Shade HEXA Stat Priority

For Shade, your 1st HEXA stat node, you’ll want

  • Main Stat: Attack
  • Additional Stat: STAT
  • Additional Stat: Critical Damage

HEXA stat is an RNG type system and it doesn’t matter what you get in the beginning since it is not worth it to reroll until your entire 6th job is maxed. Once it gets to level 20 leave it there and no matter what you got it would still be at least a 2-3% FD gain.

Ideally, you want 10/10/0 but that is very costly and you shouldn’t try to go for unless you have an excess of fragments or everything is done.
