In the past for the Mystery Dungeon series if you wanted a specific starter you had to answer the personality questions just right so that you got what you wanted. But, Mystery Dungeon DX has changed it now so that if you don’t like who you got, you can say no and then choose the Pokémon you actually want to be. So now the question is, who is the best starter and partner? Let’s get into it below!
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX the best starter and partner would be, Pikachu and Mudkip. There are lots of flying enemies so Pikachu is a great choice and Mudkip is there so that you can cover your weakness to ground types.

Best 5 Starter Pokémon
Consider Pikachu, Mudkip, Charmander, Totodile, or Psyduck. The reason you want to choose these Pokémon is because of their type and great move type coverage.
Pikachu is a great choice because Flying Pokémon are abundant in this game and Electric moves are super effective against Flying type.
Mudkip is a great choice because of its access to Ground moves which are very useful in this game.
Charmander’s moveset of multiple different move types is what puts him on top of the other fire types.
Totodile is another great choice because it has Ice Fang which can help a lot versus flying types.
Psyduck is on the list because of its Psychic type coverage which deals super effective damage to Fighting types.
Personally, I think all Pokémon are useful and have their place in the game. So, you should play your favorite Pokémon instead of what’s best in the game if that’s what you want. Depending on what you enjoy more it might even be a good choice to answer the personality questions honestly and choose that Pokémon.
I went with Charmander because that’s who I started with when I first started the Mystery Dungeon series with Red Rescue Team.
Now that you have an idea of what starter to pick, it’s time to pick your partner!
Best Partner Pokémon
After you choose the Pokémon you want to be, you will be given the option to pick a partner. This is important because you want your partner to be able to cover your weaknesses and make the game less frustrating. For example, if you choose Meowth it isn’t smart to choose Skitty as your partner because you both take super effective damage when fighting Fighting types. Instead you want to take someone like Psyduck who has access to Psychic moves which are super effective against Fighting Pokémon.
If you chose Pikachu to start with, then the best partners would be either Mudkip or Totodile to help cover your weakness to Ground moves.
If you chose Mudkip to start with, then the best partner would be Charmander to cover your weakness to Grass moves.
If you chose Charmander to start with, then the best partner to pair with would be Pikachu. The reason I didn’t recommend a Grass type here is because of how many weaknesses Grass Pokémon have and the large number of Flying enemies in the game.
If you choose Totodile to start with, then the best partners would be Charmander or Cyndaquil. A good Fire Pokémon is needed to help cover the Grass weakness and Charmander/Cyndaquil fit the bill.
If you choose Psyduck to start with, the best partners would be Charmander or Cyndaquil. Same as above where you need Fire coverage for the Grass weakness.
For any other Pokémon, you can choose from the top starter Pokémon and you’ll do just fine. Also you can pick whoever you want! If you want your partner to be Cubone then that’s what you should do and have fun!
