Pokémon Masters EX: Best Ethan Sync Grid Builds

Ethan & Typhlosion greatly benefit from having their sync grid invested in. As a Striker sync pair, they have high HP and their build lends itself to capitalizing on having a full health bar. However, their poor defenses means it might be difficult to keep them from taking too much damage. The variations in builds are primarily differentiated by how much healing or how much damage Typhlosion should deal with Eruption.

The best Ethan & Typhlosion sync grid build would be to go for Eruption Power, Eruption Move Gauge Refresh, and Stoke the Fire! MP Refresh.

Sync Grid Builds

Eternal Eruption (3/5) focuses on Typhlosion’s survivability by stacking multiple sources of healing. Endless Flows of Lava (3/5) boosts damage from keeping HP high and stacking evasiveness for a more powerful Eruption. No Relief from Heat (3/5) is a sun-focused build that can quickly use Eruption with quick succession.

Since all three sync level 3 builds have their key skills in the last unlock, none of them have an appropriate sync level 2 version. Steady Eruption (2/5) is a general build that works for Battle Villa with a powerful Eruption.

Universal Upgrades

  • HP +20
  • Defense +5
  • Sp. Atk +10
  • Sp. Def +5
  • Speed +5
  • Eruption Power +3
  • Eruption Move Gauge Refresh 3
  • Stoke the Fire! MP Refresh 2

Universal Lucky Skill Recommendation:
Critical Strike 2

Eruption is a much more powerful move and features in every build. With the high cost of 3 bars, Eruption Move Gauge Refresh 3 will sometimes restore one bar on the move gauge after using the attack. Additionally, Stoke the Fire! MP Refresh 2 will potentially allow more than two uses of Ethan’s Trainer move.

Critical Strike 2 is the recommended lucky skill because some builds will allow Typhlosion to raise his own critical-hit rate and deal more damage. Builds without Focus Rush must rely on an ally, but as a damage-dealing Striker, Critical Strike 2 is just too good to consider anything else.

Steady Eruption Build (Sync Level 2/5)

Total Sync Orb Cost: 738
Total Energy Used: 59
Unique Upgrades:

  • Eruption Power +12
  • X Sp. Atk MP Refresh 2
  • Stoke the Fire! Master Healer 2
  • Focus Rush 1

Since all other builds can’t function without their key tiles, this build comes as a bonus to hold you over until getting the grid completely unlocked.

For self-sufficiency and for Battle Villa purposes, X Sp. Atk MP Refresh 2 will potentially allow the move to be used more than twice and reach +6 Sp. Atk. The build also picks up an additional +12 power to Eruption to use up energy and increase damage.

Focus Rush 1 will increase Typhlosion’s critical-hit rate by +1 each time he uses his sync move. Stoke the Fire! Master Healer 2 will increase the amount of HP restored each time the move is used, allowing for Typhlosion to continue to weather attacks.

Eternal Eruption Build (Sync Level 3/5)

(build link)

Total Sync Orb Cost: 750
Total Energy Used: 60
Unique Upgrades:

  • Eruption Power +3
  • Stoke the Fire! Master Healer 2
  • Focus Rush 1
  • Healthy Healing
  • HP Advantage 5

Ethan & Typhlosion are a sync pair that benefit from their HP remaining as full as possible with this build. With their poor defenses, restoring the lost health is vitally important to both survival and offensive capability.

To keep Typhlosion’s HP high, Stoke the Fire! Master Healer 2 and Healthy Healing work to replenish health as much as possible. When using Stoke the Fire!, 20% more HP will be restored each time it is used. In order for Healthy Healing to activate, Typhlosion’s HP must be full when he enters the battle. If so, he will gain a regeneration effect that will activate each time he uses an attacking move.

HP Advantage 5 will increase damage dealt to an opponent the fuller Typhlosion’s HP bar is. Keep him topped up with his own skills and another sync pair to heal and/or increase defenses, and Typhlosion’s Eruption attacks will deal a powerful blow. Finally, to add a bit more damage, Focus Rush 1 is picked up to increase Typhlosion’s critical-hit rate by +1 each time he uses his sync move.

Endless Flows of Lava Build (Sync Level 3/5)

Total Sync Orb Cost: 750
Total Energy Used: 60
Unique Upgrades:

  • Speed +5
  • Flamethrower Power +4
  • Stoke the Fire! Master Healer 2
  • Bob & Weave
  • HP Advantage 5

Sacrificing some healing ability, this build focuses on damage output. Ethan & Typhlosion will need more support from other sync pairs to keep his health bar full and scale up his damage.

Stoke the Fire! Master Healer 2 becomes Typhlosion’s only way to self-heal and will restore 20% more HP with each use. This benefits HP Advantage 5, which increases move damage according to how much health he has.

Finally, Bob & Weave will increase move damage the more Typhlosion’s evasiveness is raised. Each use of Stoke the Fire! will boost his evasion by +1, so it is best to have another sync pair to more reliably max evasiveness.

No Relief from Heat Build (Sync Level 3/5)

(build link)

Total Sync Orb Cost: 738
Total Energy Used: 59
Unique Upgrades:

  • Speed +5
  • Eruption Power +3
  • Flamethrower Power +12
  • Charging Sun 2
  • Healing Sun 1
  • HP Advantage 5

Despite Typhlosion’s one passive skill being Speeding Sun 2, it seems like upon Ethan & Typhlosion’s grid release that positioning them as a sun sync pair staple was no longer the focus. However, this build best sets up Typhlosion as a sun Striker.

Although Flamethrower gains +12 power, it is only picked up to reach the two sun skills: Charging Sun 2 and Healing Sun 1. Whenever the weather is sunny, Charging Sun 2 will increase move power by 20%. Healing Sun 1 will restore some of Typhlosion’s HP whenever he uses an attacking move. HP Advantage 5 will increase move damage based on how full Typhlosion’s health bar is.
